For almost 60 years, EPI Enclosures & Engineering has worked closely with utilities and engineers across the country. Our engineering department engages with various projects, and often with utilities to design new products or establish new standards.

            In 2025, EPI started working with PEC (Pedernales Electrical Cooperative) on a new design for their CT (Current Transformer) enclosures. PEC is the largest and fastest growing electric utility in the country with the most service installations. Electric utilities use these NEMA 3R enclosures to house CTs for power distribution in commercial projects.

            Previously, PEC used a NEMA 3R screw cover type CT enclosure. This increased the potential of injury for utility workers, and lost screw covers. While this design was effective, most utilities have been moving towards a hinge cover design instead. Hinge cover enclosures offer more security, ease of use and doors that lock into an open position to reduce the potential risk of injury.

            After collaborating with PEC on this product, submitting and reviewing design concepts, and exploring material and construction options, they decided to go with the design currently used in the Austin Energy service area. This simplifies product selection where service areas overlap and makes it easier for distributors to order and stock.

            The new CT enclosure design is constructed using G-90 Hot-dipped Galvanized steel and is unpainted. It features a drip shield top and door stops to lock the hinged doors into the open position. The doors are secured with continuous stainless-steel hinges and operated with an oil tight 3-point locking handle with PFL. Mounting brackets are installed so that a CT mounting panel can be installed horizontally or vertically.
